As part of this race, I was raising money for the John Maclean Foundation, who provide accessories and renovations for kids in wheelchairs.  Thanks to generous support of friends and work colleagues, we raised over $1000 for JMF.

We started our stay with a nibbles and drinks evening with John Maclean and the Team Maclean people, including all those raising money for the foundation.   All your contributions were gratefully received – so thank you again!

The weather for the race was pretty fantastic.  Last year it was really hot, humid and this year was around 23 degrees, bit cloudy, and only a wee bit windy.

The swim around the jetty was awesome, and it was easy to get distracted looking at all the fish and stingrays along the way.  The water was crystal clear, and you could see the bottom even out at the end 2km from shore.

I paced myself pretty well on the bike, holding off in the wind and saving my legs for the run.  I was pretty happy with my ride time of 6:20.  I dallied around in transition somewhat, and then headed out on the run.  The support from spectators and volunteers was amazing, and the scenery was lovely, with the run course on the foreshore path and road along Geographe Bay.

I had been saying I’d love to do the race in 14-15 hrs, but thinking that realisitically something near 15 hrs might be posisble if everything went well.  In the end, I finished in 13:56, which I’m absolutely amazed at.  Everything didn’t go my way, as I developed a bout of gastro about 2/3 of the way through the bike, and then had to spend over 5 hrs running.  But hey, going sub-14 is not something I ever expected!!
