{"id":290,"date":"2014-09-08T04:38:19","date_gmt":"2014-09-08T04:38:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cathsoutdooradventures.com\/?page_id=290"},"modified":"2014-09-08T06:10:33","modified_gmt":"2014-09-08T06:10:33","slug":"2005-meningie-him","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/cathsoutdooradventures.com\/?page_id=290","title":{"rendered":"2005 &#8211; Meningie HIM"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This was my first foray into longer distance triathlon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I had only just moved back to Australia in early 2005, after spending 3 years living and working in California.\u00a0 Towards the end of my stay I had done 2 short triathlons \u2013 a small womens only sprint (800\/20\/5), and the Treasure Island Tri in San Francisco (Olympic distance, 1.5\/40\/10).\u00a0 \u00a0After moving to Mildura, I got in contact with the local tri club and started doing some rides with them.\u00a0 I was talked into doing the Meningie half later in the year, and the rest is history I suppose!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I travelled down there the night before and then did a silly thing \u2013 listened to others and changed what I was going to have for brekky before the race. This is something you NEVER do.\u00a0 Needless to say it wasn\u2019t a good move and my stomach suffered for it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">SWIM<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The swim in Lake Alexandrina was ABSOLUTELY FREEZING, and required a couple of swim caps.\u00a0 Uneventful, and I think the longest I had swum. Pretty sure I came out last!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">BIKE<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Coming from the riding I was doing in the US I was happiest on the bike and put my head down for a good bike.\u00a0 It was 2 out and back laps with a killer headwind. I made up a few places and went into the run feeling not too bad<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>RUN<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It had turned into a pretty sunny day by this point, and I had very deliberately laid out suncreen to put on before heading out on the run.\u00a0 Do I need to tell you that I obviously forgot it?\u00a0 Probably not.\u00a0 I ended up as red as a tomato, and very sore to boot!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I really suffered on the run for a variety of reasons:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Not run fit<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Messed up my nutrition and stomach<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It was hot and I didin\u2019t have any sunscreen<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Not run fit<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Fat and unfit<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Ambitions bigger than my abilities<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Not run fit<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After 21km of running along the lake shoreline in blazing sun, I finally finished.\u00a0 Dead last.\u00a0 Waaaaay dead last.\u00a0\u00a0 And yet it was such a small race, I can also claim THIRD IN MY AGE GROUP!!!!.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At this point in history, the next length up of Ironman was still just starting out in Australia.\u00a0 Ironman Australia was just about to move to Port Macquarie from Forster, and you needed to quality to race there.\u00a0 The way it worked was that every age group in every half race in the country had at least one qualifying spot to IM Aus \u2013 more if there were a lot of folks racing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As luck (?) would have it, the ladies who came in 1<span style=\"font-size: 11px; line-height: 0px;\">st<\/span>\u00a0and 2nd in my age group didn\u2019t want to do an IM. If someone passes on the spot it rolls down through the group until someone says YES. Well, the one spot for my age group cam rolling my way and I SAID YES!! At this point I didn\u2019t know that IM was soon to become non-qualifying and this might have been the only opportunity I would ever have to get to an IM.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And the rest, as they say, is history !\u00a0 \u00a0That was the last year you had to qualify, so the fact I\u2019m slow now doesn\u2019t mean I can\u2019t have a crack at IM.\u00a0 Unfortunately, it was also the last year of the Meningie race, due to water levels\/quality in the Lake.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This was my first foray into longer distance triathlon.
